MY COUNTRY
The name of my country is Bangladesh. It is situated in South Asia. The area of our country is 1,47,570 square kilometers. It is a small country but has a large population. It became independent on the 16th December of 1971 through a sanguinary liberation war. Thousands of people laid down their lives for the cause of our independence.
Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh. The state language of the country is Bangla. Ours is a densely populated country. About 160 million people live in our country and about 1050 people live in per square kilometre. The national dress for men is payjama and panjabi and for women is saree. But the educated people wear trousers and shirts and young women salawar and kamiz. Village people węar lungis and shirts. Sarees are the common dress for womenfolk.
The four major religions in the country are Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity. The Muslims constitute about 88% of the population and the Hindus about 10%. The rest comprise mainly of Buddhists, Christians and animists. The constitution guarantees religious and cultural freedom to all citizens of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is an agricultural country. Most of our people are farmers. Some are office-goers, businessmen, doctors, engineers, fishermen, weavers, carpenters, etc. Others are day labourers. Bangladesh is a land of rivers. The Padma, the Meghna, the Jamuna, the Brahmaputra and the Karnafuli are the main rivers of Bangladesh. There are many varieties of fish in these rivers. The land of Bangladesh is very ferttle. Various kinds of crops and fruits are grown here. Rice is our staple food. Jute and tea are our main cash crops. Mangoes, jackfruits, pine-apples, papayas, coconuts, oranges, palms, guavas, bananas are very delicious and nutritious fruits of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh has a tropical monsoon climate. There are basically four seasons in a year- Winter, Summer, Monsoon and Autumn, The average temperature across the country usually ranges between 11°C and 29°C in winter months and between 21°C and 34°C during summer months.
We have many, interesting places. The Sundarbans, Kuakata, Rangamati and Cox's Bazar are very attractive. The Royal Bengal Tiger lives in the Sundarbans. Cox's Bazar is the longest beach in the world. It is about 120 kilometres long.
Our motherland is so rich with different cultures and festivals, change of climate, scenic beauties, rich social and cultural heritage that very few countries can be rightly compared with it. We, the people of Bangladesh, are really fortunate and feel proud of being born in such a beautiful land.
