THE RECENT SIDR
The SIDR is a devastating natural calamity caused by severe cyclone accompanied by huge tidal surge. SIDR means an eye which is found at the centre of a tremendous cyclone. In 2007, in November, a devastating cyclone called SIDR badly affected the people living in the coastal areas of Bangladesh. The affected areas include Barguna, Barishal, Bhola ånd Bagerhat. Its velocity was 240 km/hr. with a tidal surge measuring twenty feet high. It left behind an extensive trail of death and destruction. It is said that at least ten thousand people were killed in this terrible cyclone. Many acres of standing erops were totally damaged and no cattle were found alive.
Even the fields were totally inundated by the saline water of the sea. On the other hand, communication system was totally broken down. Famine and pestilence broke out in an epidemic form in the affected areas for want of pure drinking water. Those who survived began to live a miserable life. In this critical situation government immediately sent their rescue team and relief goods for the affected people. Relief works were going on in full swing. Even the international communities and N.G.Os extended their hands of co-operation to the affected people of these areas. Thus normalcy was restored within a short time. If we want to save ourselves from this terrible natural calamity, we must take some short and long term plans. We need more cyclone centres in the coastal areas. People must be given prior information about the danger of the cyclone. Finally measures should be taken for afforestation along the coastal belt.
